Resources - in detail

Air

We need air to breathe virtually every second of our lives. However, this virtual resource is becoming increasingly damaged by human pollution.

Minerals

From metal for cars to concrete for buildings, nearly everything we make comes from the chemicals and minerals taken from earth’s crust.

Water

All forms of life are dependent on water. Patterns of human activity are controlled by the need to be near a source of clean water.

Food

Food is provided by things living on the earth’s surface. These depend upon the mineral resources, water and air.

Energy

90% of the energy we use come from the finite supply of minerals- oil, coal, and gas extracted from earth’s crust.

Quotes about nature, earth and environment

Nature is a self-made machine, more perfectly automated than any automated machine. To create something in the image of nature is to create a machine, and it was by learning the inner working of nature that man became a builder of machines.
Eric Hoffer

He that plants trees loves others besides himself.
Thomas Fuller

Woodman spare that tree!
Touch not a single bough!
In youth it sheltered me,
And I'll protect it now.
George Pope Morris

Come forth into the light of things
Let nature be your teacher.
William Wordsworth

What is Air Pollution?

One type of air pollution is the release of particles into the air from burning fuel for energy. Diesel smoke is a good example of this particulate matter . The particles are very small pieces of matter measuring about 2.5 microns or about .0001 inches. This type of pollution is sometimes referred to as black carbon pollution. The exhaust from burning fuels in automobiles, homes, and industries is a major source of pollution in the air. Some authorities believe that even the burning of wood and charcoal in fireplaces and barbeques can release significant quanitites of soot into the air.

Another type of pollution is the release of noxious gases, such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and chemical vapors. These can take part in further chemical reactions once they are in the atmosphere, forming smog and acid rain.

G-8 endorses halving global emissions by 2050

World leaders on Tuesday endorsed halving world emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, edging forward in the battle against global warming but stopping short of tough, nearer-term targets.

The Group of Eight leading industrial nations — the United States, Japan, Russia, Germany, France, Britain, Canada and Italy — also called on all major economies to join together to stem the potentially dangerous rise in world temperatures.

"This global challenge can only be met by a global response, in particular, by the contributions from all major economies," the G-8 said in a joint, five-page communique.
