Environmentalists no longer get "peanuts", they do make money

These days, you can make green by being green. No longer do environmentalists need to take a vow of poverty before starting their careers. Global giants ranging from Google to General Motors are making room in the corner office for executives with titles like chief sustainability officer and chief environmental officer. There are many career opportunities that integrate sustainability into mainstream businesses. Many companies don't understand what to change because they don't have the experience or expertise. There is a tremendous opportunity for people with the understanding and tools to implement more sustainable businesses. Environmental engineers are well positioned to profit from this trend. Demand is predicted to grow more than 25% over the next eight years and many of these engineers will make well over $100,000 a year. Many environmental engineers work as consultants, helping their clients find ways to decrease the environmental impact of their projects.

For those in law school, environmental law has a bright future. Environmental lawyers have the potential to earn just as much as their counterparts in other areas of law, with salaries exceeding $145,000 a year.

Those with a more creative bent may find an outlet in industrial design. Industrial designers have control over many elements of manufacturing from selecting the materials to designing the packaging, and they can directly impact the creation of environmentally friendly products.

Mathematicians and scientists hold many of the best paying green jobs. Climatologists, who study climate changes, may be consulted in the design of anything from buildings to heating systems. They can expect to make in the six digits at an experienced level. And environmental scientists can also make more than $100,000 a year studying our air, food and soil.

Hoping for an "Eco-friendly" Diwali :-)

This year's Diwali is going to be more eco-friendly in the tamil nadu capital, thanks to the growing environmental and social awareness among the citizens, particularly the young. the change is more than evident, with students of more than 80 schools deciding not to indulge in bursting crackers to protest against the engagement of child labour in the industry. also, a campaign by the tamil nadu pollution control board (tnpcb) against air and noise pollution on diwali has had its desired impact on school children. Harshini, a seventh standard student of dav public school, says she will not light up crackers as she knows that ''it has been made by children like me, who themselves don't get the opportunity to burst them.'' besides, it also poses health hazards. dav principal minu agarwal said they have been explaining to the students about the hazards caused by crackers and the pollution caused by it. ''we've instead asked them to enjoy diwali by doing shopping or doing some charity and the children have reciprocated well,'' she said. last year on diwali day, the suspended particulate matter in the air rose by more than two to six times at around 0600 hrs and the city was enveloped by a smog throughout the day, tnpcb officials explained to children. the festival would also be a cheerful affair with no loud noise waking you up on diwali day following the supreme court order restricting bursting of crackers between 2200 hrs and 0600 hrs. the city police had also warned that it would not hesitate to arrest anyone found violating the apex court order.

Threat to marine bio-reserve recedes

An algal bloom in the Gulf of Mannar has reduced the oxygen levels, causing the death of various species including coral fish, sea cucumbers, sea turtles. The algae started proliferating due to lack of rains, water currents, nutrient-richness brought about by sewage. Due to this huge proliferation of algae, there were reports of death of marine life and the toll is estimate at 5000 fish and other species. After the recent rains, the algal blooms has subsided and waters are now clear.
