Octopuses and Squids

Together with cuttlefishes and nautiles, octopuses and squids belong to a group of molluscs called cephalopods. They live in the sea, floating or moving through the water by jet propulsion, or crawling along the seabed. Cephalopods have a well developed nervous system and brain.

Many can change colour rapidly for camouflage, to confuse predators, or to attract a mate. The most familiar octopuses live in shallow water among rocks and coral reefs, but there also deep sea kinds. Squids are among the fastest sea creatures reaching up to 32 km/hr.
