"Brown Clouds" over India


The recent reports of the UNEP ( United Nations Environment Programme) identified Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata among the 13 ABC ( Atmospheric Brown Cloud) hotspots in Asian region. Another recent study indicates that Chennai and Banglore can also be plagued by the growing ABC menace. The UNEP report defines ABC hotspots as regions where the annual mean anthropogenic Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD). Exceeds 0.3 and where carbon particles make up atleast 10% of the clouds. Aerosols are any solid, liquid suspended in the air, and they include soot, sulphates, nitrates, fly ash and so on.
